[Suburbia Lost] Black Castle
Awhile back, after years of photographing abandoned buildings in urban and industrial centers, I started a project to document the ruins left behind in suburban areas.
“Often far less significant in history and construction, these places are frequently identifiable by cheap materials, corporate design, and unique reuse (if they’re even reused at all). What’s left is a ubiquitous mix of forgotten fast food restaurants, strip malls, and gas stations.”

Titled “Suburbia Lost,” I don’t really find myself adding to the project much these days. Instead, that work has now begun to cross with stories on nostalgia and the sentiment of the present tense (see “A Mansard Roof McDonald’s,” “Pizza Hut Classic,” and the “Northern Suburbs Food Tour” as examples). Every now and again, though, a truly unique opportunity to add something to the collection presents itself. Such as this former, now contrasting, White Castle north of Cincinnati.
Since 2007, the content of this website (and its former life as Queen City Discovery) has been a huge labor of love.
If you’ve enjoyed stories like The Ghost Ship, abandoned amusement parks, the Cincinnati Subway, Fading Ads, or others over the years—might you consider showing some support for future projects?
