From the Archives Part 3: Galbreath Field and the Cincinnati Riverhawks
In the latest edition of stories from the archives, some decade old photographs of an abandoned football stadium reveal the history of a short-lived pro soccer team just as the current team pursues major league status.
The Demolition of the Kings Island Resort
About a year after demolition paused, the Kings Island Resort is finally coming down. Highlighted two times previously here on QC/D, this brief follow up captures the complex's final days.
Last Guests of the Kings Island Resort
The amusement park next door was closed for the year, the resort for good. The final visitor's checked out months ago, but we were about to be the last guests of the Kings Island Resort.
The End of Suburban Cincinnati's Alpine Chalets
Originally envisioned as an alpine lodge to complement the nearby amusement park, the Kings Island Inn and Resort attracted the likes of the Partridge Family and The Brady Bunch. In its later years, it changed with the times and fell from its role as part of a "Midwestern Disney World." In the coming days, it's headed for demolition.
Remnants of a Rural Past
There was a house in Mason right off Kings Mills Rd, down the street from the amusement park and nestled off to the side from all the suburban development. It's gone now and long before it so were any occupants.
Son of Beast Trackwalkers
I walked up the steep, wooden steps and started to sweat. The coveralls were now more of a nuisance as the morning got warmer. Just shy of the 218 ft. peak, I knelt down and swung my camera bag off my back, trying not to look down or behind me. I had lost count of the number of steps some time ago. Heights have never really bothered me, but this climb did.
Kings Island - August, 1974
I borrowed the following photos from my girlfriend's father who took these during a trip to the park in the summer of 1974. At the time, Kings Island was in its third season after relocating from Coney Island. The Brady Bunch had filmed an episode there the summer before, the Partridge Family the summer before that. The photos show a different time at Kings Island, 38 years in the past. Aside from the 70's nostalgia of the "snapshot" envelope they came in with the film negatives included, they show a Kings Island much different from the one today.
[Views of Cincinnati] For Doug
I'm not even sure how to begin describing this photograph. A longer explanation follows, but I don't know where to begin. This photograph is for Doug. With his funeral approaching, it was my personal way of remembering him.
The Etheral Firmament of Class Bravo Airspace
When I was a kid, I wanted to grow up and be a pilot. Not just any pilot - I wanted to be a fighter pilot. Particularly for The Navy, preferably the F-14 Tomcat. And while I could fill this entire post with clever allusions to scenes from Top Gun, I'll spare you.
Kings Island's 230 ft. "Diamondback" almost ready.
Kings Island's newest roller coaster, Diamondback, as seen while shooting for KICentral.com. At 5,200 ft. long, 230 ft. high, Diamondback will be the park's tallest and fastest roller coaster once it opens in April and is speculated to maybe be one of the top steel coasters in the nation.
